Where forming thins the wall

Wall thickness inspection, on the outside of every bend

Wall thickness inspection happens on the formed part, not on the tube it started as. Pressing a fitting stretches the wall where it curves, and the thinnest point decides the pressure that fitting will take.

How wall thickness inspection is done

What the check is there to find, what is actually done with the instrument, and what leaves the factory with the goods.

01

What it catches

  • Over-thinning on the outside of a bend, where forming stretches the wall most.
  • Fittings pressed from tube lighter than the schedule the order called for.
  • Uneven wall around a reducer, which shows as a leak under pressure later.
02

How it is run

  • A micrometer and a thickness gauge are used on the formed part, at the points forming thins.
  • Checked as part of the re-check on at least 10% of a finished quantity.
  • Formed parts are gauged after pressing, and again in the finished-goods re-check. A thin wall is found on our bench, not on your site.
03

What you get

  • Measurements are held against the order and can be reported with the goods on request.
  • Tell us the schedule or the minimum wall your specification calls for. We confirm it against the part before you order.

Questions about wall thickness

Do you check thickness on fittings as well as tube?
Yes — on the formed fitting, which is where it matters. Pressing thins the wall on the outside of a bend, so the tube it started as does not tell you what the fitting is.
Can you make to a particular schedule?
Tell us the schedule or wall thickness on the enquiry and we will confirm what we can hold before you order.
Where on the part is the wall measured?
At the points forming thins it: the outside of a bend, the shoulder of a reducer, and the branch of a tee. Measuring a straight length of the same part would pass a fitting that is thin exactly where it will fail.
What happens if a part is under the minimum wall?
It is rejected before packing. A thin wall is found on our bench rather than on your site, which is the only place the difference is cheap.
Can I have the readings with the order?
Yes, on request. Measurements are held against the order, so they can be reported with the goods or supplied afterwards.
Can you work to DIN, ISO or ASTM tube?
Tell us the standard and the schedule or minimum wall on the enquiry. We confirm what we can hold against the part before you order rather than after it is pressed.
