It operates without a handle or actuator, relying instead on forces such as medium pressure, the weight of the valve disc or plug, spring tension, and gravity to open and close automatically. Simply put, the valve opens when the medium flows in the forward direction and closes automatically when the flow stops or reverses.

2. Opening During Forward Flow

When the medium enters the check valve from the inlet, the inlet pressure exerts force on the valve disc or plug. Once the medium's pressure is sufficient to overcome resistance—such as spring force and the weight of the valve component—the disc or plug lifts off the seat, opening the internal flow passage and allowing the medium to pass through. A stable flow rate generally enables the valve to maintain an appropriate open position, thereby facilitating continuous transport.

3. How closure occurs during backflow

When the medium's flow rate decreases or stops, or when the pressure on the outlet side exceeds that on the inlet side, the internal pressure balance of the valve shifts. At this point, the valve disc or plug returns to the valve seat—driven by reverse pressure, spring force, or gravity—and makes tight contact with the sealing surface. This closes the flow path and prevents the medium from flowing backward. This automatic shut-off capability is a key function that allows check valves to protect pumps and piping systems.

4. Mechanisms for preventing backflow across different designs

Depending on specific operating conditions, stainless steel check valves can utilize various designs, such as spring-loaded, swing, lift, or wafer types. Spring-loaded check valves use a spring to drive the valve plug shut, typically offering rapid response times; swing check valves open and close as the disc rotates around a pivot axis, making them suitable for many industrial piping systems. Despite their structural differences, the fundamental operating principle remains the same: utilizing changes in fluid pressure to achieve automatic, one-way flow control.

5. Sanitary and Industrial Applications

Stainless steel check valves are suitable for both sanitary fluid systems and industrial piping. In the food, beverage, dairy, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries, sanitary check valves typically utilize 304 or 316L stainless steel. They prioritize smooth internal flow paths, low-residue designs, and ease of cleaning, often featuring Tri-Clamp quick-connect fittings. Additionally, they require the selection of appropriate sealing materials (such as EPDM or PTFE) based on operating conditions and must support CIP (Clean-in-Place) or SIP (Sterilize-in-Place) processes.

In industrial applications—such as chemical processing, water treatment, and the oil and gas sectors—stainless steel check valves prioritize working pressure, temperature, corrosion resistance, flow rate, and long-term operational stability. Although their application environments differ, the core operating principle for both types remains the same: opening in the forward direction and closing in the reverse direction.

6. Selecting a Stainless Steel Check Valve

Selecting a check valve requires a comprehensive assessment of factors including the type of medium, pipe size, working pressure, temperature, flow rate, installation orientation, and sanitary requirements. For installations at pump outlets or in high-velocity pipelines, the valve's closing speed must be considered to mitigate water hammer effects caused by rapid closure. Choosing the appropriate structure, material, and sealing method effectively prevents backflow and protects pumps, piping, and other equipment.
