The short answer: Stainless steel relies on an extremely thin "chromium oxide film" (passivation layer) on its surface to prevent rust. While corrosion-resistant, it is not immune to rusting forever; if this layer is damaged, contaminated by iron particles, or exposed to harsh environmental conditions, rust will form.


The rust-prevention principle of "stainless steel"

Stainless steel is "stainless" because it contains at least 10.5% chromium. Chromium reacts with oxygen in the air to form an invisible, self-healing oxide film on the surface, isolating the underlying metal from external moisture and corrosive media. If the film is scratched, it can "grow back" on its own, provided oxygen is present.


However, this film is not invincible. It is vulnerable to three main things:

Chloride ions (salt, seawater, bleach, sweat stains)

Corrosive media such as acids or alkalis

Iron contamination (carbon steel particles adhering to the surface)


Three common causes of rust on valves and pipe fittings

1. Surface iron contamination (most common)

Stainless steel does not rust on its own, but it will rust if "contaminated" by carbon steel. Typical scenarios include:

Using carbon steel wire brushes to clean welds or surfaces, causing iron particles to embed in the stainless steel;

Storing valves or fittings on rusty carbon steel racks or directly on the ground, leading to iron ion transfer;

Cutting or grinding carbon steel nearby, causing sparks and grinding debris to land on the stainless steel surface.

Once these iron particles oxidize, it looks as though the "stainless steel itself is rusting." Solutions: Use tools dedicated to stainless steel; store items using wooden pallets or plastic pads for isolation; and keep stainless steel work areas separate from carbon steel work areas.


2. Damage to the passivation layer

Rust spots can appear if the passivation layer is locally damaged—and unable to repair itself in time—following welding, machining, or impacts during handling. Solutions: Perform pickling and passivation (using nitric acid or citric acid) after welding or machining to allow a complete passivation layer to reform on the surface. 3. Improper Material Selection / Harsh Environments

Using Grade 304 (which contains no molybdenum) in seawater, coastal areas with salt spray, or high-chloride chemical environments leads to pitting and crevice corrosion over time. This is not a case of a "counterfeit product," but rather incorrect material selection; grades like 316/316L or even duplex stainless steel should be used for such conditions.

Surface Rust vs. Actual Corrosion


Learn to distinguish between the two:

• Surface rust: Caused by iron contamination; it can be removed with stainless steel cleaner or mild acid, leaving the base metal undamaged.

• Actual corrosion (pitting/deep craters): The base metal itself is being compromised, indicating an issue with the environment or material choice; the material or operating conditions need to be changed.


How to prevent rust on stainless steel valves and fittings?

1. Prevent iron contamination: Use dedicated tools, store separately, and use wooden pallets or plastic pads as barriers.

2. Perform pickling and passivation after welding or machining to restore the integrity of the passivation layer.

3. Select materials based on operating conditions: Use 316L or duplex steel for high-chloride environments; do not force the use of Grade 304 in seawater.

4. Ensure proper installation: Clean valve faces, use new gaskets, apply anti-seize compound to bolts, and tighten evenly in a star/crisscross pattern.

5. Clean regularly: Use fresh water and a soft cloth; avoid chlorine-based cleaners and steel wool, which can scratch the surface.

Stainless steel does not mean "never rusts"; rather, it relies on a passivation layer for rust resistance.
